"LETTER TO THE WALL STREET JOURNAL"
Letter to WSJ:
We have been using EMRs in my ophthalmology practice for more than six years. I have found that the use of EMRs in our office has been of great benefit to my patients, office staff, and me. My records are not only legible but much more thorough, organized, and complete. The template used for the chart, once customized after many months of use, makes the time I spend documenting the visit much more efficient. It allows me to record more useful information, avoid omitting important data and spend less time doing it. It facilitates communication of my findings to the patient's primary care provider.
All of the patient's tests taken in the office are automatically inserted directly into the patient's electronic record. There is no chance of misfiling or lost papers.
Electronic prescribing makes prescription writing easier and safer than ever. Not only does it eliminate handwriting errors, the program automatically checks for patient drug allergies and the patient's insurance drug coverage. It suggests substitutions of medications for a patient whose insurance doesn't cover the originally prescribed drug.
It certainly wasn't easy to get to this point. I shared Dr. Valinoti's frustrations for many months. Tweaking the EMR required many hours of time spent on my computer after office hours. At this point, I feel it was well worth it and certainly enhances the quality of patient care.
The "meaningful use" requirement established by the government, however, has been a terrible burden and, for the most part, a waste of time. It is an endless list of mostly meaningless requirements that the EMR and doctor's office must fulfill to qualify for a stipend that is only a fraction of the cost of implementation and to avoid future penalties imposed by the government.
