What Is A Cataract?
A cataract is a clouding of the normally clear lens of the eye affecting approximately 24.5 million in America, a leading cause of vision impairment. For people with cataracts, vision can appear cloudy and blurry, similar to a mist, frosted, or fogged-up window.

Clouded or blurry vision caused by cataracts develops slowly over time which may affect your quality of life and may cause difficulty reading, driving a vehicle, or vision at night.
If you are experiencing impaired vision you may be a candidate for cataract surgery by an experienced ophthalmologist to improve your vision. Dr. Stein will be able to determine if you are a candidate and recommend a reputable surgeon.

During Surgery
Cataract surgery is most common surgical procedure performed. About 3.6 million surgeries are performed annually in the US and more than 20 million will be performed worldwide.
Cataract surgery is a two-step outpatient procedure which typically takes 20-40 minutes.
It consists of removing the cloudy lens through a small incision, breaking up the cataract into small pieces, vacuuming them out and replacing the lens with an implant. Many patients heal within weeks after having this sight-restoring procedure.

Postop Surgery and Recovery
You may experience itching; fluid discharge and mild discomfort for several days after the surgery while your eyes heal. Discomfort should disappear within a few days.
Dr. Stein will typically recommend eye drops daily to aid in the healing process. Eye protection including sunglasses or eye shield is recommended to protect your new eyes.
On average, healing occurs within 6 weeks and you will see Dr. Stein at intervals to check on your healing progress and ensure you get the outcome desired.
